  1. Even though you bought an adapter, see if one's available for your truck from http://www.etrailer.com that has connectors which are designed to plug right into your wiring harness in the rear of the truck. You can splice in the wires, but it's harder to do because you don't know which color wire to match up with the connector wires on the kit you bought. If you have the amber or orange turn signal lenses in the rear like many GM trucks do, you also need a 4 wire to 3 wire converter for standard U Haul type trailer wiring. This is the cable adapter harness to use if you have the towing package option on the truck: http://www.etrailer.com/pc-VWH~118241.htm
  2. I think you will need pigtail to plug into the wiring. I don't think splicing in will work. Go to the dealership and ask.
  3. get rid of the wal-mart crap . it will only cause bigger probs later. go to auto parts store (autozone ) and get an adapter that plugs straight into your vehicle harness, no splicing or guessing at all. costs about $40 .
  4. You should just use the custom wiring kit . It is preferable in most cases since it plugs into the wiring harness, which makes it easier to install. A universal wiring kit splices into the wiring harness and requires more work. http://www.hitches4less.com/ford-explorer-trailer-wiring-kits.html Now if you are wiring a 4 flat then it wires in as follows. White = Ground Brown = Tail, License, Sidemarker, Clearance & I.D. Lamps Yellow = Left Turn & Stop Green = Right Turn & Stop http://www.bradstrailer.com/flat41.htm
