How can I cut plastic model car pieces without ruining them? I recently started building scale models of classic cars again for hobby/relaxation purposes. I had an idea to combine pieces from a couple different model kits to make sort of a "frakenstein" cutsom looking truck (a cab from one kit, a bed from another, etc) but a couple pieces, namely the truck bed, would need to be cut a little bit to make them fit together. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this?

How do you make plastic model kits look destroyed or crashed and smashed up? I am a fan of building plastic model vehicles, like cars, trucks, and military craft. You remember these models as a kid - playing with the X-Acto knife and the dizzying model glue. I like to make models look as authentic as possible, but I would like to make some of them look crashed or junky...how would I go about doing this? How do you take a completed model and turn it into a junkyard creation? Also, are there any websites or groups associated with this sort of thing? Basically, I want to destroy some finished models, but make it look like they were supposed to be built that way. Thanks for the help.

Does anybody remeber a plastic model kit called "Spin Welder"? It was a lot like other plastic models with different designs, like cars and planes, but instead of using glue to attach the separate pieces you use a drill like tool with plastic tips that melt when pressed against the pieces and thus welds the pieces together. I thought that was a really great idea but I haven't seen anything like it for many years.
Where can I find a model car kit for a 1956 Oldsmobile Delta 98? I don't care if it's plastic or diecast...MUST be a hardtop Looks something like this: http://www.upstateoldsclub.com/images/pics_10_14_2006/Mikes5698.JPG
A couple of questions about model car paint? I bought my fiance a model car kit for his birthday this year. I've never had such a hard time finding anything ('87 IROC Z28 Camaro - also the car he has in the driveway). It's exactly what I was hoping for, he loves it, but there's one problem. The paint we bought isn't doing it any justice. It leaves obvious streaks, takes 2-3 coats to fully cover the gray plastic, and because of so many layers of coat, it tends to peel. He's only done a very small portion of it, so I don't see an issue fixing it, but I have a few questions. -What is the best way to remove acrylic paints from plastic? Some of it can be easily peeled off, but what about the thinner parts? -What is the best kind of paint to use on something like this? Something that goes on pretty evenly, without such a high chance of streaking. -Where can we find above kind of paint? I don't know of too many shops around here made for this type of thing.. Thank you for any help, it's greatly appreciated! =]
Model Kit shops in the Egypt? I wanna noe where i can find TAMIYA plastic model cars or anything similar, if u noe please leave and exact adress or number

Which airbrush for building plastic models? My daughter and I both build model kits. She likes cars and I build submarines. I want to start using an airbrush, such as Paasche or Iwata. I think that I would prefer a single action, siphon type, internal mix model. All of the fine detailing is done by toothpics or very small brushes. The airbrush is mostly for car bodies and larger parts. I know the pros and cons of the various types of sprayers, I'm just asking to see what other modelers would suggest. I'm not looking for the cheapest or the most expensive, but one that will work well for my application. Thanks for any suggestions.
Do kids still build model airplanes, cars, ships? Or is it just old guys now? I'm thinking primarily of plastic kits, like I built when I was a kid, but also wood (for ships and balsa for planes) and/or metal, etc, etc. etc. I know there are a lot of Lego sets and Zoobs and magnent construction sets and so forth. Do kids build airliners (737, 777, A320, A380, etc) or jet fighters (F/A-18E, F-15C, Su-27, Harrier) or cars (Mustangs! New Beetles, Honda Civics)? Thanks.
helmet painting? Just for fun are there any paints that will stick well to a bike helmet? I was looking mabey at that Krylon Fusion plastic paint or mabey paint for a model car kit, has anyone out there ever had success painting a bike helmet?
Any car parts store ships to europe? I'm looking to buy an air induction kit for my nissan micra K11 1.oL 95' model. But not K&N as it's too much for such an upgrade. Any store that have any kits fitting my car which aren't too pricey & ships to europe? Can I simply buy a cone-filter & attach a pipe to it's inlet and guide the pipe to the car's inlet, maybe a plastic or stainless steel pipe? cos if it's that easy I'll do it myself.
Big Daddy Roth fans? Another blast from the past tonight--remember Rat Fink and other art from the Car Toons Hot Rod magazines? Remember the cool model car kits you could build--with metal parts that you had to glue together and then paint? Not the plastic junk available nowadays...
Know of a website like this? Does anyone know of a website where you can buy plastic or metal body car kits that are oldies. I am mainly looking for cars from 1970's to when cars were first made. The main one i am looking for is a 1915-1931 Model A/T (Either) Ford Pickup. Please let me know, my dad and i want to build these cars together, and we can't find that model car. It can't be preassembled. Please let me know. I know this is a lot of information, and kind of specific, but please help if you can.
My car needs body work. How do I find a shop that won't rip me off? Or can I do it myself? I am pretty handy I used to make lots of really good plastic models of battle ships and cars. So in my mind, I was thinking maybe I can fix my car's body. Someone hit it when it was parked and left!! It's pretty major damage to the shell. How do I find a shop for body work? I saw prices for body parts on ebay that should total $400 in materials. And new body kits are around $500 so I might as well get a new body kit? And then try to find a decent shop to install it? Or should i do it myself? How do I find a shop that won't rip me off? I don't know any one around with body shop experiences.
I got a JVC car CD deck for christmas and now I need a wiring harness and fit kit for it where can I find them The deck is a JVC model KD-S14 and I have a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan. Model 1969 Chevelle Kit? Where, if anywhere, can you find a model of the '69 Chevelle that Reese Bobby drives in the movie Talledega Nights? I want it to be a kit that I have to put together, and it should be metal and a good looking car. Nothing plastic that can be put together in five minutes. If the car from Talledaga Nights is not available, then just a '69 Chevelle in general.
What is plastic wood? I know about artificial woods made of plastic, but that's not what I'm talking about. I assume it's something like wood putty, but I'm not possotive. The following is a quote from GeorgeTrosley.com that may give you an idea of what it is that I'm talking about; "Cars were always a major interest for my brother and me and we drew our "dream machines" all the time. We also built model cars while growing up. I could come up with wild customizing ideas and used plastic wood to mold parts from one kit to another. My brother had the patience and body-working talent to turn them into prize-winning creations. Car magzines like R&C constantly fed us fresh concepts and current styles, and we ate 'em up. We began winning almost every hobby-shop model contest around- and were eventually banned from a few"
Problem with car audio amp can you help please?!? I have a pioneer amp it is a gm model and a little while ago i had a problem with the amp making my lights flicker really bad in my car when it was putting out sound then the amp stopped working. So I couldn't find any problems then i looked at the in line fuse holder and I had to use a pair of pliers to get the fuse out it wasn't blown but where the metal plugs come out of the fuse some of the plastic was melted and there was a lot of acid build up so I replaced the fuse and my amp started working fine for 2 days now it is doing the same thing the wire kit I have to power my amps is rated for 1200 watts and my amp is 790 and the in line fuse is 80a what could be the problem? thanks
HOW can YOU enjoy tighter, quicker shifting? EASY; with our short shift kits. you could reduce shift throws by as much as 50 percent, saving precious time during acceleration. Our kits are engineered for maximum precision and long life, and CNC-machined from solid metal, so there are no welds to separate or break. PLUS we use Zero-clearance bronze brushings in the shifter stub and connecting stubs-no plastic brushings that wear out. KIT B, for late model BMWs, reduces throw only, KIT C, our ultimate kit, gives you the greatest reduction of throw and maximizes leverage for a race-car feel!!! NOW YOU TELL ME THIS AINT COOL!!!! Can I use craft clay as clay bar? I read on this forum that you can use craft clay as a clay bar. Can anyone give me reasons not to? Posts made by carguy123: "Clay is great, but you don't need to spend megabucks on the kits, do it the Grassroots way! Go to your local craft store or even the craft department of Wal Mart and buy a package of their synthetic clay. It usually comes in a package of colored strips. Now you have a large amount of clay so you can make a good hand sized wad that is much easier to work with than those stingy little balls they give you with the kits. The liquid that comes in the kits is simply a detergent/water mix to make it slippery. You can use a car wash/water mix or a Dawn dishwashing soap/water mix. I prefer Dawn. The experts recommend washing with Dawn occasionally to strip the old wax anyway. This will give you several clay kits for quite a bit less than the cost of just one of the Automotive kits. It works great! I've done it this way for years and my cars look great. You are supposed to rework the clay occasionally to work the contaminants into the clay ball and keep them off the surface so they don't scratch the paint. That is so much easier when you have a large wad of clay than one of those teeny little balls like comes with the kits. If you drop your ball on the ground, with the expensive kit that comes with only one ball you have to take the time to pick all the little pieces of dirt and grass out and hope you've got all the grit out, with the cheap stuff you just toss it. When you use clay sometimes little bits will adhere to the car and they can be a bugger to get off. This usually happens when you've hit too dry of a spot, an extra dirty spot or over a seam. I like to use a contrasting color clay so that it is easy to spot and I can go back over that spot with the bar until I have all the clay off the car." "A little update on clays. It seems there has been a shake up in the clay industry :p Several salespeople at the different craft stores I visited said they were no longer able to get all the different clays they used to get. They can't get the polymer enhanced clay (what I thought was synth). What's left is a wax based clay, which is exactly the clay you want! The only reason I liked the Polymer stuff was that it was softer especially in cold weather. So what you are looking for is a non hardening & reusable wax based modeling clay. I found it at every store I visited. It was always hidden in the crafts section and not in the toy dept. It comes in 2 different color ranges - primary colors and earth tones. You want a color that is different than the color of your car so that you can easily see when little clay pieces have stuck to the body. This is a clue you aren't using enough lube or that you have an exceptionally rough area that needs more attention. Little specks of clay left on the car wreck havoc with your waxing as when you wax over them they spread out and leave dull areas on the finish. So being able to use a contrasting color clay makes your job much faster and easier. I ended up spending $1.97 for enough to do 5 clay treatments. Now I could store the clay and reuse it as the Clay kits suggest and get 10 or more cleanings, but why?! Also I've got big, meaty, hand sized chunks of clay instead of the silly putty size pieces that come in the expensive kits. This makes the work go much faster, you are less likely to drop the clay and it means the clay won't fill up with contaminants as fast. So let me see... $18 for Mothers and I can do a car 1-2 times or $1.97 + $ .50 for lube and I can do a minimum of 5 times in less than half the time. Well the choice is obvious, I'm going to spend the $18 because it must be better since it costs more! I mentioned on a previous post about grit in some clays. Someone else mentioned that clay is supposed to lift the dirt out of the finish and not be a polisher. Be warned some clays are polishers! See the link below. http://www.topoftheline.com/auto-detail-clay.html If you need a polisher, like to clear up the crazing on your headlight covers or take off overspray buy one of the automotive clays with grit in the clay. If all you want is to clean up your car finish use the modeling clay which has no grit added. I wonder if this would work to help clear up the faded plastic back glass in convertibles?" Original URL: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/ever-use-a-clay-bar/1646/page1/ P.S. On page 2, there is a guy who posted pictures of his results. Sorry bout the long question, but basically it all says that a guy suggests using wax-based modeling clay as a clay bar alternative.
Want to win a quick ten points ? Well summarize this article? Photographs taken of Liam Johns' crib by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office clearly show where it came apart. The drop rail had detached from its plastic track, creating a gap through which the 9-month-old boy slipped feet-first. Instead of falling to the floor, Liam got his head stuck between the rail and the mattress. Trapped in a hanging position, the boy asphyxiated. Liam's April 2005 death prompted an investigation by a federal watchdog agency and a family lawsuit against the crib's manufacturer, Simplicity Inc. If the crib already has the newer hardware (see attached graphic), consumers should still check the crib's drop rail to ensure it is assembled right-side up. Once the Tribune began questioning the company and the agency this month, a massive recall of Simplicity cribs followed. On Friday, the CPSC took action on 1 million cribs, including the model that the Johns family used for Liam. It is the largest recall of full-size cribs in the agency's history. In its Hidden Hazards series, the Tribune has documented how the understaffed and sluggish CPSC fails to protect children from dangers in toys and other products. The paper's examination of Simplicity's popular cribs underscores that, even in the aftermath of a child's death, the agency can fall short in its watchdog role, leaving children vulnerable to a documented hazard. Interviews and records show that the federal investigator assigned to Liam's death failed to inspect the crib in his initial inquiry and didn't track down the model or manufacturer. "We get so many cases," the investigator, Michael Ng, said in an interview this month. "Once I do a report, I send it in and that's it. I go to the next case. We could spend more time, but we are under the gun. We have to move on." Only last week, after inquiries by the Tribune, did Ng return to California to find the crib. It had first been held as evidence by sheriff's police and later was put in storage by a lawyer retained by the family. Even with the recall, it remained unclear why it took so long to address the problem. The CPSC often gets bogged down in negotiations with companies over recalls because fedx eral law limits its powers and its ability to disclose details of its investigations into dangerous products. Nancy Cowles, a child-product safety advocate and executive director of Kids In Danger, called for congressional hearings to look into the delay. "Was it because the CPSC has no power and the company was able to stall?" she asked. When first presented with the Tribune findings this month, Julie Vallese, spokeswoman for the CPSC, said the agency could not comment about Simplicity. "We have more than one investigation open, and that's why I can't answer any questions," she said. In announcing the recall Friday, the CPSC blamed a flawed crib design and hardware that allowed parents to install the drop rails upside down, which can cause the rail to detach from the frame. The agency said it was aware of seven non-fatal cases of infants being trapped and 55 other cases of drop-rail problems. It also linked the Simplicity cribs to three deaths but did not release the names of those children or the dates of the fatal accidents. One of those children was Liam Johns, records show. Another was 6-month-old Edward Millwood, who died in November 2006 in Georgia. The third was 8-month-old Royale Arceneaux, who died in February in Houston. All three children fell between the mattress and a separated drop rail. The drop rails in those deaths had been installed upside down. But the agency also found two incidents in which correctly installed drop rails failed to work properly. Ken Waldman, president of Simplicity Inc., said in an interview Friday that the company makes safe products and works closely with the CPSC to fix any problems. He would not say why the recall did not occur earlier. "This is the thing to do and that's why we decided to do it now," he said. The Aspen 3 in 1, once Simplicity's best-selling crib, accounted for the bulk of the recall. About 600,000 of those models, which are no longer made, were recalled.
Easiest way to make resin molds of model parts? I've started building model cars recently, but a lot of the parts I use aren't standard with the kits. I would like to start making molds of these parts and then casting them in resin so that I can have as many as I need. I've ordered resin parts in the past, but it would be so much easier if I could do it myself. What's the easiest way to make a mold of plastic/resin parts? And where do I get resin? Or is there something that I could use to substitute resin...I'm on a budget. Yeah, sorry 'bout that. I meant molds "for resin".
